History ————————
- The Redbone Coonhound dog breed has an interesting
history. Originally, any hunter with a red dog with proven ability
in treeing and tracking raccoons and an unknown ancestry would call
his dog a "Redbone". Later, serious breeders started selectively
breeding to create these red dogs with superior raccoon hunting
abilities. Initially these dogs had black saddle markings and were
called Saddlebacks, but further breeding produced the solid red-colored
dogs that became Redbone Coonhounds.
- Redbone Coonhounds were bred to be reliable hunting
dogs with a foxhound-like appearance, moderate size, and courageous
nature. They are best at hunting raccoons, but can also hunt other
game, such as big cats.
- Thanks to their skill and happy disposition, Redbone
Coonhounds are used both as hunters and as companion dogs in the
United States.
