Home Made Dog Food ideas

Because of the recent massive dog food recall, more and more people are wanting to make their own home made dog food. Buying the best quality dog food is not always the best answer as manufacturers sometimes adds ingredients that may be unnecessary or harmful to your dog. I have a few recipes I would like to share with you.

Recipe #1:

Combine the following ingredients in a saucepan:
4 cups of uncooked rice, 9 cups of water, 1/4 cup of oats, 1 teaspoon of salt. Bring all ingredients to a boil, and once boiling, add the following: 2 cups of chopped vegetables, two beaten eggs, 3 tablespoons of corn oil, 8 ounces of lamb, 3 ounces of chopped liver, 2 tablespoons of chopped parsley, half cup of 2% milk.

Stir all ingredients and turn the heat down to low. Cook until all water is absorbed (about 20 minutes). Once the water is absorbed spread out mixture and cool. Cut home made dog food into small squares. You can substitute lamb for another meat. Add 1 cup of wheat germ for each 30 pounds of dog weight.

Recipe #2:

Brown ground beef and set aside. Steam a pound of mixed vegetables. Allow to cool to lukewarm. Coarsely chop vegetables in a food processor. Combine vegetables with ground beef and rice. Refrigerate and seal tightly.

Recipe #3:

Remove bones from one can of salmon. Combine one egg, 3 tablespoons of corn meal, and salmon. Form mixture into a ball and fry in a small amount of canola oil until it's brown on each side. Make home made dog food into small bite sized bits and stir it with boiled chopped vegetables.

Create your own recipes by utilizing the following ingredients:

- Brown Rice

- Omega 3 oil or cod liver oil

- Ground meats such as beef, chicken, lamb, tuna or liver.

- Carrots

- Peanut Butter

- Apples

- Flour, whole wheat flour or soy flour

Home made dog food can be kept a few weeks in the freezer
. Switch your dog's foods gradually to make it easier on his digestive system. Switching without a transition period can cause diarrhea and gas.

Always consult your veterinarian before makeing any big changes to your dog's diet.
