The Hunting Dog

Basic Dog Training it all starts with you and respect

Dog training basics should be your first step whether you are training hunting dogs or pets. By training your dog, you will learn to work together. Your pup should learn the basic commands for a successful future together.

Commands your dog should master.

1. "Watch Me" - The dog learns to focus his attention on you.

  • Hold a treat near your face.
  • Say the command.
  • When dog looks at you, give treat and praise.
  • Keep the dogs focus longer each time. If he looks away, say "Watch Me" again.

2. "Sit" - The dog sits down beside you on command.

  • Use "Watch Me" to get dog's attention.
  • Say the command.
  • If the dog does not sit, hold the treat over his nose and move it backward slowly. He will end up in a sit by following the treat.
  • When the dog sits, give treat and praise.

Dog training basics3. "Stay" - The dog remains in a sitting position until called.

  • Follow instructions for "Sit" command but do not give treat or praise.
  • Say the command.
  • Take a few steps away from your dog.
  • If he moves, put him back in a "Sit" and repeat.
  • If he does not move, mentally count off 10 seconds.
  • Say "Release" (or choose a release command of your own), give treat, and praise.
  • Extend the time the dog must "Stay" slowly.
  • Move further away from the dog as training progresses.

4. "Come" - The dog goes to you when called.

  • Follow steps #1 through #5 for "Stay" command.
  • Do not release your dog, instead say "Come" and call your dog to you.
  • When the dog reaches you, make him "Sit".
  • Give him a treat and praise.
  • Practice this command in the house first.
  • If you practice in a non-enclosed area outdoors, use a long leash. Never trust your dog off-leash until he has completely mastered these dog training basics.
  • If your dog becomes distracted coming back to you, get his attention again.

5. "Leave it" or "give" the dog learns to release either a bird, treat or toy.

  • Place a treat in the palm of your hand.
  • Hold your hand out to your dog.
  • If he tries to take the treat, close your hand and say "Leave it".
  • Open your hand again.
  • When the dog does not go for the treat, say "Take it" and allow him to eat the treat from your palm.
  • Practice waiting longer each time before letting him have the treat.

The key to basic dog training is consistency and practice. Work with your dog for short periods every day. Always give plenty of praise and tasty treats for a job well done.

If you start feeling frustrated while working on these dog training basics, take a break. Always keep the training fun and positive.
