Beagle Dog Breed Description

  • The Beagle dog breed is small, squarely-built, and sturdy with an easy-to-care-for short, sleek coat that comes in many colors and combinations including black and tan, red and white, lemon and white, orange and white, and tri-color. The coat is hardBeagleand close.
  • Beagles are similar in appearance to small English Foxhounds. They have broad, slightly rounded skulls, straight, square muzzles, round feet, full nostrils, and wide, long, pendant ears.
  • The eyes have a distinctive pleading expression and are generally hazel or brown.
  • These dogs have a characteristic bay or howl of a bark when they are hunting.

Temperament

  • Beagles are sweet, lively, curious, and gentle dogs who love everyone. They are happy tail-waggers, but also highly intelligent, sociable, and brave. They are wonderful with children and other dogs, but should not be trusted with non-canine pets unless socialized with them from a very young age.
  • These dogs have minds of their own and require firm but patient training and sufficient physical and mental activity to prevent behavioral problems such as obsessive barking, snapping, and guarding.
  • Dogs love to play tracking games and to follow their noses. Once they have a scent they become all-work, and they may not even notice you calling them.

Height and Weight

  • Adult males tend to be 14-16 inches tall and weigh around 22-25 pounds.
  • Adult females are generally 13-15 inches tall and weigh about 20-23 pounds.

Living Conditions and Exercise

  • The Beagle dog breed does well in an apartment setting as long as they receive sufficient exercise and time outdoors. They are active indoors and should have lots of stimulation.
  • This breed is very energetic, and they require a daily walk and, if possible, time to romp and play in a fenced-in yard. Always use a leash on walks, as Beagles have a tendency to take off after wild game.

Life Expectancy

  • Well-cared for dogs can be expected to live 12-15 years.

Grooming

  • The coat requires regular combing and brushing. Dry shampoo or bathe with mild soap as necessary, and check ears carefully for signs of infection. Nails should be kept trimmed.
  • They are average shedders.

History

  • The Beagle dog breed is among the most popular scent hound breeds. Most likely a cross between the English hound breeds and the Harrier, these dogs are known for their sweet disposition, energy, and willingness.
  • Beagles hunt in pairs, in packs, and alone, and they are particularly skilled at hunting quail, pheasant and hare. They are also used for narcotics detection.
